Living with a shedding dog: what keeps the hair down

Our teams clean after about 250 dogs a month. What actually keeps dog hair under control between cleanings, and which popular tricks don’t help very much.

Denver has a lot of dogs, and our teams vacuum up after roughly 250 of them a month. Here is what we have learned about keeping hair under control between visits.

What helps

  • Brushing the dog outside twice a week in spring and fall, when the undercoat comes out.

  • A washable cover on the dog’s favorite spot on the couch, washed weekly.

  • A small cordless vacuum by the back door for a two-minute pass each evening.

  • Rubber gloves, slightly damp, for pulling hair off upholstery.

What helps less than people think

Lint rollers on large surfaces, air purifiers for hair specifically (they help with dander, not tumbleweeds) and robot vacuums on rugs with long pile, which tend to wrap hair around the brush roll.

How it affects your clean

Two or more shedding dogs add about 20 minutes to a standard clean, so we add $20. One dog, no charge. Huskies count as two.

Or have us do it

Flat prices by home size, two cleaners and all supplies. First visits are usually four to six business days out.
